Hydraulic pressure calibrators can be used to calibrate pressure products that are normally exposed to or can tolerate a hydraulic pressure medium. Hydraulic pressure calibrators are primarily used in high-pressure applications generally above about 6000 psi (400 bar) but can also be used at lower pressures. Typically, Hydraulic pressure Calibrators are used to calibrate pressure measuring instruments that in their day to day operation are already exposed to hydraulic media. At high pressures, a gas can store a lot of energy because gasses are compressible and any sudden release of a compressed gas can be dangerous. Hydraulic media are not compressible and store much less energy at these high pressures, therefore, when hydraulic media are acceptable, it is safer to calibrate high pressure measuring devices using a hydraulic pressure calibrator. The instruments used may be different than those used with in pneumatic calibration but there are instruments that can tolerate both types of media.

Hydraulic Pressure Calibrators come in a variety of forms (deadweight testers, automated controllers and indicators), some can generate their own pressure and some require a regulated pressure source. In either case, a hydraulic pressure calibrator is simply a device used to measure hydraulic pressure at a sufficient accuracy (usually 4 times better than the device being calibrated).
